The “luv guv,” Mark Sanford, will get no help from the National Republican Congressional Committee; that’s not speculation – that’s fact, after Politico reported today that the NRCC has pulled the plug on their support of Sanford’s bid for South Carolina’s 1st Congressional district.
“Mark Sanford has proven he knows what it takes to win elections. At this time, the NRCC will not be engaged in this special election.”
That from NRCC spokesperson Andrea Bozek. Ouch!
This all stems from the latest “Sanfordism” to reveal itself: apparently his ex-wife filed trespassing charges against him months ago after a Super Bowl Sunday “no no” by him that, on the surface, would sound innocuous enough. He says his 14-year old son was home alone and he simply came over to watch the game with him.
“I did indeed watch the second half of the Super Bowl at the beach house with our 14 year old son because as a father I didn’t think he should watch it alone. Given she was out of town I tried to reach her beforehand to tell her of the situation that had arisen, and met her at the back steps under the light of my cell phone when she returned and told her what had happened….out of respect for Jenny and the boys, I’m not going to have any further comment at this time.”
If I’m guessing, though, it’s not the incident the GOP’s so pissed about; it’s the fact that he KNEW of the complaint, KNEW of the pending court appearance about the charges filed against him by his ex-wife, and said nothing to nobody until the Associated Press got their hands on court documents.
Oh, and then there’s this: Mark STILL has defenders, after all! Check out Prudence Paine’s spin on this…
“It’s obvious that the opponents of Sanford have nothing beyond slime-ridden, ill-gotten personal attacks to combat his stellar public voting record. None of the despicably leaked contents of the sealed family court records alter my opinion that Mark Sanford is by far the superior candidate to represent the Lowcountry. It does not shake my belief that I can count on him to vote to save America from debts and deficits and weak defenses. I will still vote for Mark Sanford for Congress on May 7, and I urge all other 1st District voters to do the same.”
I wonder where Prudence was when then-Congressman Mark Sanford had this to say about then-President Bill Clinton…
